South Dakota's Unemployment line staying open longer

Associated Press - January 13, 2009 9:45 AM ET

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - More South Dakotans are losing their jobs, so the state's Unemployment Insurance Call Center has expanded its hours.

The Department of Labor office is now open from 8 a.m. to 6:20 p.m. Central time to take calls from people filing for benefits.

Labor Secretary Pam Roberts said this time of year is usually busy, but the center has been taking a higher than usual number of calls over the past two weeks.

She said it's the result of layoffs across the state.

The Unemployment Insurance program provides temporary financial help for workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own.

Claims can be filed by calling 605-626-3179 or going online at http://www.sd.uiclaims.com.
