Michigan is starting to improve its busy unemployment insurance telephone lines

According to Crains Detroit the State of Michigan is taking steps to improve their unemployment insurance call centers' capacity. They are hiring 90 new temps to work the phones with the new staff starting in February 2009, and they have also started mandatory overtime at the call centers, suspended flexible work schedules and are adding more lines to the Michigan Automated Response Voice Interactive Network system.

The agency has been encouraging workers to file their claims online on the agency’s Web site, www.michigan.gov/uia.
