According to the South Florida Business Journal Florida's unemployment rate climbed to 8.1% in December 2008. This is above the national unemployment rate of 7.2% and is the worst Florida has seen since 1992. As the state's housing and real estate markets continue to decline, the construction sector lead the way in job-losses.
To make matters worse for Floridians, the maximum unemployment insurance payout that eligible unemployed Floridians receive is $275/week.
